Brush it Off

Hi Girls,

Today I wanted to cover the latest make up brush trend which has make up lovers by storm;  toothbrush style make up brushes. If you are an avid social media and blog reader you will have seen these brushes appear in almost every blogger or make up artists posts, they literally look like a tooth brush (or the larger ones a dishwashing brush as seen in many parody videos). My question is are they a fad or are they worth investing in?

The most well known company to sell these brushes is Artis, a high end brand which retails the tools from £28- £60 per brush , or £284-£410 for a full set. For the average person that's a lot of money to spend on brushes, but more recently a range of affordable options have been available.

The range I went for are from a brand called Iconic London, I got the face brush set which is for contouring and highlighting and creating a flawless base. The set at the time cost me £30 (plus £5 for delivery) and included 3 different sized brushes. I bought the brushes on pre order, however they did arrive earlier than expected.

First impressions of these brushes were good as the rose gold finish was eye catching, and the bristles were soft to touch. The brushes don't feel 'expensive' and this can be seen from the material of the brushes as they are made from plastic and not metal, however for the price this was expected.

When I first used the brushes I used them to apply both liquid and powder products, although the tools are meant for both personally I feel they work better for liquid and cream products and found applying powder to be cakey and difficult to blend.

The bristles are all the same density for the different sizes, as a make up artist I find the smaller a brush the less dense and packed bristles should be to get better control of blending. For this reason I feel the largest brush in the set works best, and the smallest is quite challenging to use as a blending tool. I did however find the smaller brushes handy for cream highlighting and contouring although I still needed to go over the concealer with my beauty blender or buffing brush as the Iconic brushes didn't blend the product in as much as I would have liked.

A month of using the brushes on both myself and clients my verdict is that although they can be handy they are not an essential brush, I have found myself reverting back to my handy Real Techniques and Laura Mercier brushes. I would recommend the larger brushes for seamlessly blending and creating a great base, other than this I am slightly disappointed as I have seen so many high profile bloggers use similar brushes.

I did see the Artis brushes in Space NK last week and the bristles seemed a lot softer and less dense
which is clearly the biggest difference between the real deal and an affordable alternative, my next expiriment will be to try one out and do a comparison to conclude whether the extra money is worth the spend.

One point I did want to mention in this post is the customer service experience I received from Iconic, I noted shortly after I purchased these brushes the price jumped to £40. Personally I find that a big change in price over a short period of time, and would be unhappy to be paying £10 more than others for the same product. I also found it was quite difficult to contact the company or get any sort of response until I tweeted them. I got in touch with their PR team and had a similar issue. For me this was the biggest downfall of the experience, which has put me off repurchasing from the brand for the time being.

I pride myself in giving honest reviews to all my readers to help them in any way I can by sharing both good and bad experiences. I hope for this reason other customers do not have a similar experience and this was just a one off  as the brand does have a lot of good products including an amazing strobe stick.

Have you ever tried a beauty product which did not live up to the hype?

Glossy Girl

Hey girls,

As mentioned in my last post I did a massive Anastasia Beverly Hills haul on Black Friday so I am doing a series of posts to cover the products I bought.

Today I am going to cover what I felt was the ultimate bargain buy from the lot, that is the Lustrous Lipgloss Set.

The set includes 8 of the ABH most popular gloss shades including (listed in order from left to right) :

-Glided, a subtle metallic gold
-Danity, a pretty baby pink
-Sunset Strip, a coral/pink with added sparkle
-Socialette, a cherry red
-Weekend Barbie, fuscia with a hint of glitter
-Date Night, a sparkly pinky red
-Metallic Rose, a metallic purple/pink
-Black Cherry, a deep purple

Swatches of the set, L-R:Glided, Danity, Sunset Strip, Socialette, Weekend Barbie, Date Night, Metallic Rose, Black Cherry
I personally found the lighter metallic and glittery shades, particularly Glided and Sunset Strip, were not as pigmented as the rest of the colours. I have been using these two colours on top of other lipsticks to make the most of the colour, but wouldn't really wear them alone. All of the other colours have great colour pay off.

My favourite shades in the set are Danity and Black Cherry, however I also like the Metallic Rose as its such a different shade to any I have come across.

I did not find the glosses super sticky, as I have found some glosses can be, however the glittery shades had a slight stick compared to the muted colours. Overall these glosses feel pleasant to wear and smell AMAZING, literally like sweets, an added bonus when wearing them.

What I love about this set is that there is a gloss for every occasion, and the price is unbelievable for the value for money ($40 in the US, or £33 in the UK which works out as £4.13 per gloss- A-M-A-Z-E). I am not usually much of a gloss girl and tend to wear lipsticks more often however I give these glosses a massive thumbs up, they have won me over as preferred choice against the Mac lipglass, its just a shame we can't buy the individual ABH lip gloss shades in the UK.

I also bought my first ABH matte liquid lipstick, which will be covered in a seperate post so stay tuned!

Are you a lipstick or a gloss girl?

A Makeup Revolution

Hi Girls,

Apologies for the gap in my posts its been one crazy wedding season, but now I will get down to business!

How many of you spend countless amounts of money on products, which you may or may not end up using much?

(slowly raises own hand)

I am a massive make up hoarder, but one brand in particular has blown me away for both its quality and price. The brand I have recently become obsessed with is Revolution. I have seen a few reviews about the brand and the products were so cheap I thought, what's the harm in trying?  I have done the same thing for countless other brands, and usually the novelty wears off but this drugstore brand is here to stay in my favourites collection, it really is the queen of dupes for some amazing products.

Revolution is available both online and in Superdrug stores, I was first tempted by it in a Superdrug store, but the online store us just as efficient and easy to buy from (plus my Superdrug is always low on stock which shows how popular it is). I will run down some of my favourite products and when you see the prices you will all be as amazed as I am!

Revolution Flawless Matte Palette

This was my first, and still my favourite Revolution purchase. The palette has 32 matte shades in earthy-neautral tones and is a must have addition to any girls make up essentials. The pigmentation and blending of these is as good as, if not better than, most luxury brands. The colours are ones you will use on a day to day basis for a basic look or a smokey eye. I have used this palette as much as my Naked 2, so it really is up there as one of my favourite purchases. £8 for 32 shadows… what's not to like?

Revolution Highlighter Palette

I purchased this as an addition for my own kit during my highlighter phase, but I loved it so much it's now a part of my professional kit. Countless times clients have commented on how amazing the highlighter is, and asked me where they can purchase it. Considering I have in the past spent so much money on expensive highlighters these remain my favourite and only costs £6 for all three.

The palette has three shades; lilac peach and pearl all with a shimmer tone so there is a shade to compliment all skin tones. These are available as individual highlighters too, but as I use them for my pro kit the convenience of having 3 in 1 case was perfect for me.

Revolution Oil Control Make Up Fixing Spray

I live by Urban Decays all nighter fixing spray, but I have to say this is a close second and a much cheaper alternative at just £5. The spray can be applied after applying make up for a long lasting hold, perfect for long days, summer and holidays! This spray doesn't run, fixes make up well and gives a great long lasting finish. I bought it in "matte" but I think there is also one for a dewy finish.

Revolution Blush Cleanser and Shampoo

These two have been a GOD SEND for me. I wash my brushes after every use ready for my next client so brush cleanser can be an expensive essential. I have used Mac's and although I love it, I get through it so quick I needed to find a cheaper alternative.

I then came across both of these; the cleanser is great in between a deep clean and the shampoo really does clean my brushed thorougly for an amazingly almost new feel. You can really see the results right away with these, and the next day my brushes feel soft and back to their original tamed condition.

The cleanser and shampoo are £5 each, and a great investment. If you are unsure which to get I would choose the brush shampoo as it is great for a one off clean.

So those are my favourites but I can't fault the range as I have also used 'the one' concealer, the blush palette and also the lipsticks… the range keeps getting bigger and bigger and I am sure in future I will post about more of Revolution's products which I love. All products in this post are avilable on the Makeup Revolution website: http://www.makeuprevolutionstore.com

Do you have any Revolution, or other branded dupe favourites?

There is No 'I' in Team

Hey Guys,

A bit of a short but personal post today, about my journey of becoming a hair and make up professional. Some of you may remember the controversial post I wrote in regards to a fashion show I worked at about a year ago, for which got me a bit of stick (and that was me holding back and being polite) . I have always been one to speak my mind, and since that blog post I have been very careful about who I choose to work with, be it paid or for publicity, nothing will compromise my self worth.

Ms Curvaceous finalists.

Although I have started my own business as a freelance hair and make-up artist, I know a lot of my bookings, connections and so on would not be achieved without opportunities from working with others. The hair and makeup industry survives from word of mouth and recommendations so it's always been important for me to connect with others who are on the same wavelength and path as me. Since the incident a year ago I have worked with some amazing, motivating individuals including Shaneen and Hayley from Breathe Happiness, the team I worked with at Luton Fashion Week and very recently all of the creative individuals working and showcasing at Ms Curvaceous UK.

My previous post had a lot of individuals responding to me with ‘thats the industry, you have to be thick skinned' . I agree you must be thick skinned, but that doesn’t mean allowing your hard work and professionalism to be slated, I disagree that that is what the industry is made of, and this year and these people have proved that theory for me. I have made some great connections over the past year, mainly women like myself who are working hard and are dedicated towards their passion, whether it be hair, makeup, photography, styling or blogging.

Ms Curvaceous was a particularly eye opening experience for me, I have never met so much positive energy and motivation in one room. The hair and make-up artists, models, photographers and organisers got to know each other, swapped contacts and have even been in touch to work with each other again. Something which can be classified as rare as many individuals are out for themselves (so it seems). The back stage teams at many events rarely get coverage or appreciation but my social media has been absolutely bombarded (in a good way) since last week with pictures, comments and all around motivation!

I hope to do many more projects like this in the future, because its shows the power over unhealthy competitiveness, jealousy and sabotage against one another in an industry where every creative individual is trying to reach their goal and shine through. For those of you setting up your own business, I advise you to be careful of the projects and ‘opportunities’ you choose, and don’t let someone think THEY are doing YOU a favour, especially in situations where you may be working for free or portfolio building.

Have you found yourself in a similar situation within your creative industry?

If you know the Bobbi Brown collections well you will know the shimmer brick is one of the most amazing and essential additions to any girls make up bag, so what better over the festive season than this new copper diamond shimmer brick?  This is a great highlighting product, and Bobbi's shimmer bricks are always a people pleaser, you just can't go wrong!

£45.00
This is a great gift for any girl; whether she likes subtle and natural every day make up, or is just a make up junkie. The most amazing part of this unique palette is that it actually smells like chocolate- make up AND chocolate you say? What more could a girl want?!

I am aware Too Faced is releasing its new Semi Sweet Chocolate palette on the 15th December, however I am not sure if this launch will be exclusive to Sephora, or also be available within the UK.

Price begins at £46.50 for 30ml

I first came across this amazing fragrance from my manager, once she shared the secret with me I HAD to try it at the airport on my way back from holiday. Although it doesn't come cheap, I will guarantee the scent of this is worth every penny spent.

The scent is a combination of luxury florals and fruits, and is so beautifully distinctive it will get people talking as you walk past.

Stocking Fillers and Secret Santa (£15-£40)

Beauty essentials any girl would love to receive...

£16.00

I shamefully only just received my first beauty blender, and all I can say is I can't believe it took me this long.

The beauty blender is a sponge like tool which blends foundation and concealer effortlessly for a flawless finish.
If you girls don't have one of these in your make up bag, please send a hint to get one for Christmas- I promise you won't regret it!

£37.00

There has been a big trend on Tom Ford lipsticks, I did not quite understand it until I tried one for myself. Oh gosh, I want them all!

These are slightly on the expensive side for a lippie, but make amazing gifts to treat someone special. I recommend a shade which can be worn both day and night to get the most wear and money out of the product, I opted for 'Casablanca.'

Essie-Winter-Baby-Its-Cold-Outside-Quad-Box_1636143/
£24.99

I love loVE LOVE Essie nail varnishes. Anyone who knows me well knows my obsession for nail colour. These polishes are great value for the price they come at and are available in a massive variety of colours. I find they stay on well with a good top coat (I use Seche Vite).

Each season a gift set is available, this winter the set includes:

Mademoiselle : the most classic grown up pink
Chinchilly: sleek granite grey
Toggle to the top : sparkling crushed garnet red
Belugaria : highly textured matte black

So those are my top recommendations guys and girls...

Are you are struggling with beauty related gift ideas?

I am always here to help and give me opinions so leave a message and I will try my best to advise you, in the mean time happy holidays...

No More Raised Eyebrows

Hey Girls,

Following on from the success of my latest post on hair growth, I have decided to go for something similar and this time cover brows.

Its taken me a while to get the fullness & shape
but it has been worthwhile

Over recent years especially, eyebrows have become an important focus in make up and grooming. They can frame your face, and complete and change an entire look if done the correct way. I recently took a course and I am qualified now to do the ‘7 step celeb brow’ which is very similar to a number of the better known, and branded eyebrow regimes out there (possibly a little more cost efficient). It follows all the steps it takes for perfectly groomed brows.

My brows are something a number of my instagram followers, and friends compliment me on often, but they used to be two shapeless thin lines! So how did I do it?

Well here are a few things I did to grow them:

  • I stopped having my eyebrows regularly threaded, and decided to take a break to grow them out
  • Using tweezers in between if absolutely necessary, but try not to touch them more than once a week, and DON'T over pluck- strays only!
  • My secret ingredient to growing my brows has been Castor Oil... seriously go buy a tub NOW! it has made my eyebrows thicker, and enabled me to grow them into a more appealing shape

The Growth
Before: Shapeless, over threaded &thin
After: Arched and thick with definition
I use castor oil £1.45 (with mink oil) every evening after removing my make-up, the smallest amount is needed as its of quite a thick consistency, just use fingers to evenly spread over the eyebrow area. I saw a difference within the space of two weeks of doing this. I have never tried pure castor oil as of yet, that may be my next step, but so far castor oil with mink oil has worked well for me.

The Shaping Products
Like with any hair growth, whether its in between a wax or haircut you have the period where your eyebrows look unruley but the trick is brow powder! I swear by the nyx eyebrow powder, its cheap and cheerful and really helps make your eyebrows “look” tamed even when they aren’t perfect. I usually just tweeze any obvious hairs outside of the shape once I have filled them in. The trick to applying the powder to look natural is of course an angled brush, and a light hand (don't get too excited with the amount of product on the brush).

Maintenance  & Presentation
Now my eyebrows have grown out, I shape them once every two weeks (using the threading technique). On a day to day basis I use my NYX brow powder (£13.50), and for those special occasions I have been using Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Promade in Ebony (£13.00). This product has had some AMAZING reviews from top bloggers, so of course I had to get my hands on it.  I luckily had a friend willing to pick it up on a trip from America, but it is now also available at cult beauty online for those in the UK. I have to say, it takes some time to get used to, and the first few times I didn’t like it as it was thick and heavy and a bit ‘scouse brow’ but now I have been able to perfect the technique of limiting the product on my brush and blending out as much as possible I love LOve LOVE it!

So guys its that simple... castor oil, brow filler and lay off the shaping for a few months and it really does make a difference, believe me when I say its worth it! Remember theres a thin line between groomed, and marker pen brows- those are not so hot, so try and maintain your look to keep it as natural as possible.

Pucker Up!

Hey Guys,

Those of you following my Facebook page, twitter or Instagram will know I recently went to the IMATS in London. It was obviously heaven on earth for me- the make up, and discounted prices, I will definitely be making another trip in store next year! The talking point at the IMATS was the huge queue going through the whole venue. But what were hundreds of make up enthusiasts queueing for? Was it worth the hour and a half wait...?

The queue was for NYX and in my opinion it was definitely worth the wait, the brand always does great products with a professional finish and this post will show you exactly what I mean.

I first discovered NYX least year at the pro beauty exhibition and I have been addicted ever since. My favourite brow palette was my first ever purchase, and I now double it up as a smokey eye shadow kit for an everyday look. At £9 (IMATS price- £13.50 online)it was a bargain.

My new addition this time around are the lip creams. The finish and feel of these is better than anything similar that I have tried so far, both drugstore and high end make up brands. I bought four shades in two completely different finishes to test and I will definitely be adding to this..

The shades I bought are:

Spice Xtreme Lip Cream (bright red- shine finish)
Candy Land Xtreme Lip Cream (baby pink- shine finish)
Buttery Nude Xtreme Lip Cream (peachy/nude- shine finish)
Milan Milan Soft Matte Lip Cream (baby pink- matte finish)

These ranged from about £3.50-£5.5-0 at IMATS and are available online for £5.50 (matte lip cream) and £7.50 (extreme lip cream).

Top- Milan Milan
Middle- Spice
Bottom-Buttery Nude
My favourite is the nude, as I have found it difficult to find a nude which I feel suits me, this is perfect especially paired with NYX lipstick in Indian Pink (oh how well that fits!). My only regret is I didnt buy more shades in a matte finish, as at the time I was in a debate about whether I would like them. I actually love the Milan Milan I purchased in matte, and I think I will venture into more matte shades following on from my experience.

They feel really good and comfortable on my lips, and not sticky or drying which I find some super shiny or matte finishes can do. I can get away with wearing them for about 4-5 hours before needing to reapply which is amazing.

All in all my favourite purchase of the day and I look forward to adding to my NYX collection, this really is a pro brand at a budget price!

What are your favourite NYX products?
